The United Nations Office of Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), through its UN-SPIDER program, and the Government of Pakistan are jointly organizing and international conference and subsequent training course in Islamabad this May. The upcoming events will focus on leveraging space technology to support the Early Warning for All (EW4ALL) initiative, climate action, and proactive, disaster risk assessment. The registration deadline is fast approaching on 15 March 2026.
Hosted by the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) and co-sponsored by UN-SPIDER and ISNET, the program is divided into two comprehensive segments.
International Conference (11-15 May 2026): A strategic forum featuring expert presentations, technical sessions and high-level panel discussions. It will focus on promoting space-based technologies for early warning systems, advancing climate action accross key sectors (water, agriculture, forestry), and assessing progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
International Training Course (18-22 May 2026): A five day hands-on technical capacity-building course centered on "Shifting Focus from Reactive to Proactive Approaches." Participants will gain practical skills in satellite remote sensing, quantitative flood and drought risk assessment using tools like Google Earth Engine, and heatwave hazard evaluation.
Organized within the framework of UN-SPIDER, these events are designed to advance the implementation of key global policy frameworks. By strengthening international cooperation and building technical capacity in developing nations, the initiative directly supports the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, the Paris Agreement, and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, with a particular emphasis on SDG13 (Climate Action) and the UN EW4ALL Initiative.
Interested stakeholders, space agencies, and disaster management professionals are encouraged to apply immediately. The final day to register online is 15 March 2026.
